Leyda Vineyards is located in the coastal mountain area of Chile, in the recently discovered Leyda Valley (D.O. San Antonio Valley), about 8 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The winery’s philosophy is to look for the best terroir, where each grape variety can reach its maximum potential. Coupled with careful vinification and delicate aging, this approach allows Leyda to consistently produce some of the highest quality, most elegant wines from Chile. Leyda’s most distinguishing characteristic is its location in a cool climate, coastal area with moderate, rainy winters and dry summers. Here, the Humboldt current of the Pacific Ocean creates evening fog that dissipates in the early morning, and allows clear days with lots of sunlight and low relative humidity. These climate characteristics allow grape ripening to take place at a slower pace, prompting a fuller development of aromas and fruity flavors, and ensuring a perfect balance of sugar and acidity in the wines. Currently, Leyda has over 622 acres of planted vines. All of these vines are planted on slopes with infertile soil, and managed so that yields are kept to a low 2 tons per acre. These low yields, together with intense canopy management and controlled irrigation in the vineyard ensure that Leyda achieves the ideal ripening conditions for each variety. Leyda’s wines are crafted with the aim of attaining the full potential of Leyda’s unique terroir and ensuring the highest quality end-product. The winery makes use of the most modern equipment, including pneumatic presses, gentle pumps and a temperature interchange system for both grapes and must. The cellar has 56 stainless steel tanks of varying capacities, each with temperature control systems. This diversity allows Leyda to separate different lots, and then classify the various components for final blending. The winery uses 70% French and 30% American oak barrels, from the world’s most respected coopers. It works with different styles of oak (Allier, Nevers, Troncais, Vosges) to obtain more complexity and elegance in its wines.
